How Long Does a Malaysia Immigration Appeal Take?

One of the most common questions people ask is how long the immigration appeal will take. The short answer is: there is no fixed, officially published timeline. But we can share what we have seen based on handling these cases.

Typical timeline

Based on our experience, most immigration appeals in Malaysia take approximately 6 to 12 weeks from the date of submission to the date of a response. Some cases are resolved in as little as 4 weeks. Others, particularly those involving prior deportation, multiple offences, or complex circumstances, can take several months.

The actual processing time depends on several factors:

• The type of case (blacklist, overstay, entry denial)
• The completeness of your submission (incomplete submissions cause delays)
• The strength and clarity of your supporting evidence
• The current workload at the Immigration Department
• Whether your case requires inter-agency checks

How to follow up

If you have not received a response within 12 weeks, you can follow up in writing. Reference your case details and the date of submission. You can also contact the Immigration Department Headquarters directly at 03-8000 8000 (MyGCC) for a status update.

Keep your submission receipt or proof of postage. If you submitted in person, note the date, the name of the officer (if provided), and request a stamped acknowledgement.

What happens after the appeal is decided

If your appeal is successful, the blacklist or restriction is lifted and you can apply to enter Malaysia normally. If it is rejected, you may, in certain circumstances, submit a further appeal to the Minister of Home Affairs, whose decision is final under the Immigration Act 1959/63. This route applies in specific statutory contexts and is not automatic.
